Funded
by a housing and Urban Development Revitalization Grant, the modernization is
one of 32 demonstration projects throughout the country. The client's goals were
to master plan an existing low income housing development of 400 units in 83 buildings
and eliminate 20 units, rehabilitate the unit interiors, provide exterior "enhancements"
and develop more open spaces for community gathering areas. Rehabilitation included
complete refinishing, new kitchen cabinets, new furnaces, water heaters and appliances.
The remodel, rennovation and new construction began in '96 and was completed '99.
Construction cost was $16 Million. Land studies provided better use of open space
along with improved accessibility to other buildings within the complex. Exterior
enhancements included redirected walkways, landscaping, play areas, improved lighting
and off-street parking.
